Living Your Best Life with Braces

If you’re thinking about braces for yourself or your teen, you likely have some questions. At Wang Orthodontics, we’re here to support you and put your mind at ease.

You can absolutely stay active while straightening your teeth. We want you to keep doing what you love, but it’s important to wear a protective mouthguard. You can find "orthodontic-friendly" mouthguards at sporting goods stores, or just ask us — we’d be happy to provide one for you.

If you ever have an accident involving your face, check your braces and teeth immediately. If anything feels loose or damaged, give us a call right away so we can take care of you and get your smile back on track.

Keeping Your Teeth Clean With Braces

Keeping your smile healthy is a team effort. Since food loves to hide in brackets, we recommend brushing after every meal and flossing at least once a day. Regular cleaning prevents permanent white stains and keeps your gums happy.

What to Eat (and What to Avoid)

For the first few days, stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, or soup. Once your mouth gets used to your new braces, you’ll be back to your favorites in no time.

To keep your treatment on track and avoid extra office visits, try to stay away from:

  • Chewy foods: Bagels, licorice, and hard rolls
  • Crunchy foods: Popcorn, ice, and chips
  • Sticky foods: Caramels and gum
  • Hard foods: Nuts and hard candy
  • Foods you bite into: Cut corn off the cob and slice up your apples or carrots

Will My Teeth Feel Loose During Treatment?

Don’t be alarmed. It is completely normal for your teeth to feel a little loose. They have to loosen up first so they can move into their beautiful new positions. Once they reach their goal, they will settle in and become nice and sturdy again.

Types of Braces We Offer

We offer a couple of cutting-edge options to choose from:

  • Metal Braces: These are smaller and more comfortable than ever. You can even customize them with fun, colorful bands.
  • Clear Braces: Made of ceramic, these are less visible and are a popular choice for adults and older teens.

Looking for an alternative to braces? We also offer Invisalign® treatment for teens and adults. These removable aligners are virtually invisible and let you eat all your favorite foods. Contact us to learn if this is a good treatment option for you!

Braces and Rubber Bands

Elastics (or rubber bands) are strategic tools that help improve how your upper and lower teeth fit together. When you wear them exactly as prescribed, they work incredibly well to achieve your goals faster. Plus, you can show off your personal style by selecting fun colors at each appointment!

Handling Emergencies at Home

How Do I Deal With General Soreness?

When you first get your braces or have them adjusted, your teeth might feel tender for a few days. A warm salt water rinse (1 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) works wonders. If you're feeling a lot of discomfort, you can take whatever over-the-counter medication you normally use for a headache.

How Do I Fix a Poking Wire?

If a wire is irritating your cheek, you can gently use the eraser end of a pencil or the back of a spoon to tuck it under the main wire. If it still bothers you, just pop some wax on it.

What if a Bracket or Band Comes Loose?

If a bracket is loose but still attached to the wire, simply apply wax to keep it from moving. If it comes off entirely, save the piece and bring it to your next appointment. Give us a call so we can decide if we need to see you sooner.

10/10! Definitely recommend to anyone who wants or needs braces! Professional & efficient!

Nicole was very knowledgeable. She explained 2 different type of braces while we waited for Dr.Wang.

Incredible experience. unlike other orthodontists, You’ll get the truth here, as opposed to a big hurry to braces when they aren’t necessary yet. I HIGHLY recommend this office.

We have been going to Wang Orthodontics for several years. We went most recently for a consult for our youngest to begin phase 2 of the braces process. My son has some missing teeth that will need to be addressed over time. I was beyond thrilled with Nicole who was so knowledgeable in the areas we needed to talk about. She explained options we could think about and even was able to share a personal story with how amazing dental bridges are while we wait for our son to be old enough for implants. Dr. Wang followed up and concurred with everything Nicole shared as well. Both of them really helped to ease some concerns we have and helped us in making the best decision with what type of braces would be best in our situation. We are so happy that we are working with some of the absolute best dental staff out there and woukd not hesitate to recommend Wang to others!
